Corley sisters’ US Open debut ends in heartbreaking fashion

Date:

Aug. 30—Ivana and Carmen Corley’s U.S. Open debut ended with a tough second-round loss on Friday afternoon in New York.

The 10th-seeded team of Veronika Kudermetova of Russia and Hao-Ching Chan of Chinese Taipei outlasted the Albuquerque sisters 7-6 (7), 6-7 (4), 6-4 in a grueling match that took over three hours.

The Corleys were given a wild card entry into the U.S. Open, and they proved themselves worthy of that choice with their performance this week. They won easily in straight sets in their first-round match on Thursday, and gave the 10th-seeded team all they could handle Friday.

The first-set tiebreak was a crucial turning point, as the Corleys squandered three set points before eventually dropping the set. They rebounded in the second-set tiebreak, but were broken twice to fall into a 5-2 hole in the third and deciding set.

The Corleys earned $40,000 for reaching the second round in their first-ever Grand Slam appearance.
