El Paso man fatally shot breaking up fight in Northeast, police searching for suspect

An El Paso man was fatally shot as he attempted to stop a fight in the parking lot of a Northeast apartment complex, authorities said.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting about 11:35 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22, at the North Mountain Village Apartments located at 9435 Diana Drive, El Paso Police Department officials said.

Jose Rufina Melendez, 23, was found by officers with a gunshot wound, officials said. Melendez was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

An investigation revealed the shooting happened during a fight between two groups of people in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Melendez was “shot when he attempted to intervene,” officials said.

The shooter fled the scene before officers arrived.

Police are asking anyone with information on the fatal shooting to call the El Paso Police Department at 915-832-4400 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477.

No further information has been released as the El Paso Police Department’s Crimes Against Persons unit continues to investigate the fatal shooting.
