Faylor Lake to host disc golf tournament

Date:

Aug. 30—BEAVER SPRINGS — Nearly 300 spectators are expected to watch top-ranked disc golfers in a tournament at Faylor Lake Sept. 14 and 15.

As of Thursday, 275 people had paid $50 to watch players at the Faylor Lake Classic Skins match. The number of spectators is being capped at 400, Snyder County Commissioner Joe Kantz said.

The upcoming tournament has attracted 144 pro and amateur players who will begin with qualifying events Sept. 12 at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club which has added a disc golf park on its grounds in partnership with the Faylor Lake Disc Golf Park. Glow-in-the-dark matches will also be held there, increasing the “spectator experience,” Steve Braud, managing director of OTB Discs and designer of the courses, said.

Interest in the county-owned asset in Beaver Springs that features a 140-acre lake, 18-hole disc golf course, walking trails, and a newly installed pavilion, restrooms and concession stand is high and the reason the commissioners have been investing heavily in the area.

“I don’t think we’ve scratched the surface with what we’ll attract there,” Kantz said.

The county is working with Stahl Sheaffer Engineering, of Selinsgrove, to design a boat launch and equestrian trail at the site.

The county has received another $100,000 state Fish and Boat Commission grant, requiring a 50 percent match, and an $89,795 Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development grant, with a 25 percent match, to add the planned enhancements at the lake. Kantz said federal grants are also being sought for more improvements.
