A fire Saturday afternoon destroyed a barn in Valley City.
Smoke from the fire in northern Medina County could be seen for miles.
Andy Baillis, chief of the Valley City-Liverpool Township Fire Department, said crews responded to the 1:30 p.m. fire on Center Road just west of the community’s business district within five minutes of the initial call.
“As crews left the station, they noted a large plume of black smoke, and immediately requested mutual aid from several surrounding departments, including water tankers and tenders as there are limited hydrants in that area,” he said.
By the time firefighters arrived, Ballis said, the barn was already engulfed in flames and the roof was starting to collapse.
No one was injured in the fire that destroyed the barn along with several vehicles that were parked inside.
The blaze was brought under control within 30 minutes and crews remained on the scene for about two hours to extinguish hotspots.
Ballis noted that the fire appears to be accidental. The Medina County Fire Investigation Task Force is assisting in the investigation.
Numerous Medina and Lorain county fire departments responded to the fire to assist the Valley City-Liverpool Township Fire Department, including: Brunswick Hills; Litchfield Township; Erhart-York Township; Grafton Township; Columbia Township and Medina.
