Former Oilers Forward Hangs Up His Skates

Date:

EDMONTON — All’s well that ends well.

According to a recent article by BP Sports Niagara, former Edmonton Oilers forward Riley Sheahan has retired from playing hockey.

This may surprise some, but the NHL journeyman hasn’t played professionally since the 2022-23 season. He split that season between the Buffalo Sabres, Rochester Americans, and the National League’s EHC Biel-Bienne.

Sheahan played for the Oilers in the 2019-20 season. In 66 games, he scored 15 points and averaged 12:48 of ice time.

Despite not playing for a couple of years now, Sheahan is happy with where he is in life, where he finds himself helping with the Niagara North Stars once a week.

“I’ve kind of wanted to get back into coaching a bit, ” Sheahan told BP Sports. “They have external guys come in and run a skate and kind of provide some assistance, maybe a different voice.”

“It’s been fun.”

Watching the kids come for these skates has made Sheahan realize something—he wants to help them achieve what he did, playing in the NHL.

“These kids are working their way to that and they just love hockey so much,” Sheahan remarks, “It’s cool to see that, so I definitely have a deep appreciation for kids at that age where they’re trying to achieve their dream and I’d like to help.”

The 2010 21st overall pick played 637 games in the NHL. In addition to the Oilers he made stops playing for the Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Seattle Kraken, and the aforementioned Sabres.

One of the coolest moments in the latter part of his career was scoring the first goal in Seattle Kraken history.
