Four children and one adult were rescued Monday morning from a second-floor Chestnut Street apartment by Corning City firefighters and transported to a local hospital by American Medical Response.
Corning City Fire Chief Brad Davies said the Corning City Fire Department was dispatched to 192 Chestnut St. for a structure fire with entrapment at about 11:46 a.m. Firefighters arrived on location two minutes from the time of dispatch and found a two story, two-unit apartment building aflame on the first and second floors.
Firefighters proceeded to get the family to safety and fight the blaze.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while extinguishing the fire, Davies said. The affected residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Davies said the incident at 192 Chestnut St. demonstrates the extraordinary teamwork and dedication of Corning first responders and partner agencies.
“Thanks to their quick action and coordination, five lives were saved under challenging circumstances,” Davies said. “I want to commend the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, and all assisting agencies for their exceptional efforts.
“This was a true community response, and we’re grateful for everyone who played a role in ensuring the safety of our residents.”
