Gaby Lewis takes over from Laura Delany as Ireland women’s captain

Date:

The 23-year-old has already led Ireland on 12 occasions and will start the role full-time with the team’s tour of Bangladesh and India later this year

Gaby Lewis was named the skipper of the Ireland senior women’s cricket team on October 15 (Tuesday) by Cricket Ireland. She replaced the experienced Laura Delany for the position.

Lewis, who is Ireland’s fifth-most capped player, having debuted as a 13-year-old in 2014, is also the country’s highest run-getter with 3742 runs at an average of 28.95 in 136 matches across the two formats- T20Is and ODIs. She also has two centuries to her name in T20Is and a total of 21 fifties across formats.

The 23-year-old has already led the Irish women on 12 occasions and will start the role full-time with the team’s tour of Bangladesh and India in November and January respectively.

“Laura Delany is an icon of Irish cricket having led the national team with distinction for over eight years during a time of great change and challenge. She has been an exceptional leader guiding the team through significant milestones in the evolution of our sport. Her contributions as captain cannot be understated,” Ciara O’Brien, National Women’s Selector said in a statement.

Ciara, while stressing the fact that Delany will continue to play the role of a senior player in the side, added, “Gaby Lewis will take on the role of captain with Orla Prendergast being appointed vice-captain.”
