COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The attorney representing Gamecock women’s basketball star, Ashlyn Watkins, has commented on the charges she faces.
On Saturday, the University of South Carolina’s (USC) women’s basketball team forward was arrested by campus police following an incident at an on-campus affiliated apartment complex.
Watkins was charged with assault and battery and kidnapping.
WIS News 10 spoke with attorney and state representative Todd Rutherford over the weekend.
“We just ask for patience as we unpack what happened two nights ago and we firmly believe when all the facts come out this will simply be a misunderstanding. And she maintains her innocence throughout this entire process,” Rutherford said.
According to an arrest warrant, Watkins allegedly assaulted an unidentified female by “forcefully grabbing her face, pulling her by her arms, and pushing her.”
Watkins appeared in a bond court hearing where she was granted a $30,000 personal recognizance bond. She is scheduled to appear in a first appearance hearing on Friday, Oct. 25.
