It’s official! There is snow in the Smokies.
LeConte Lodge saw its first snow of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The lodge, situated just below the 6,593-foot summit of Mount LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, reported getting 4 inches of fresh powder.
Snow first appears in the mountains at an altitude of about 3,700 feet and starts sticking to trees at 4,300 feet, according to LeConte Lodge.
The fresh powder began to fall on Tuesday evening.
Despite the snow, a majority of the trails and roads in the Great Smoky Mountains continue to be open, including Cherokee Orchard and Roaring Fork.
U.S. 441, also known as Newfound Gap, was temporarily closed as crews clear the road.
