With the opening fixtures of the Champions League fast approaching, a four-time winner of Europe’s elite competition has given his verdict on how he thinks Liverpool will fare.

The Reds are returning to the tournament after a year-long absence and are set to take on AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday 17 September.

Liverpool received a tough draw with standout matches coming against defending champions Real Madrid and last season’s Bundesliga invincibles Bayer Leverkusen, who will both visit Anfield.

Arne Slot has already named his Champions League squad for the opening league phase of the tournament and the Dutchman will be hoping for some continental success in his first season in Merseyside.

Speaking to the Express, former Barcelona and Manchester United defender Gerard Pique has revealed his predictions for this season’s Champions League.

Elliott injury blow

Harvey Elliott has reportedly picked up an injury whilst training with England’s Under-21s that could see him out of action until the end of October.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Elliott has fractured his foot and is expected to be sidelined until after next month’s international break.

The 21-year-old has faced a tough start to the season, only featuring for seven minutes in Liverpool’s opening three Premier League games but now it looks like he is set to miss at least seven matches for the Reds.

The injury comes at a bad time for Liverpool who are set to begin their defence of the Carabao Cup and also enter the Champions League after a year’s absence, both before Elliott becomes available again.

Wonderkid set for debut

New Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha is in line for his debut in a Red shirt this weekend. The date could be set.

The Athletic reports that Rio Ngumoha trained with Liverpool’s senior side this week. The majority of that team is away on international duty, of course, and Arne Slot took the opportunity to have a look at some of the Reds’ younger players.

Ngumoha was among them, fresh after completing his move from Chelsea‘s academy. The teenager has all the potential in the world – or at least, that’s the belief at both Chelsea and Liverpool.

John Terry recently echoed that sentiment. “This boy is and will be a top player,” he wrote on Instagram, reacting to the news that Ngumoha was moving to Liverpool.

Roy Keane praises Trent’s MOTM performance

Trent Alexander-Arnold excelled once again for England on Tuesday night and picked up his second Player of the Match award in two games.

England took on Finland at Wembley on Tuesday night and Alexander-Arnold once again impressed, assisting the first of Harry Kane’s two goals on the captain’s 100th appearance for the Three Lions.

Despite Kane’s brace, it was Trent who took home the Player of the Match award, which he has now won in back-to-back games.

After a mixed Euros campaign with England in the summer, during which Trent was played as a midfielder, the 25-year-old looks to finally be establishing himself as a must-start for England.

Slot to unleash next Thiago

There’s an ‘exceptional’ midfielder at Liverpool who could become Arne Slot’s ‘Thiago.’

Life under Liverpool’s new head coach has been nothing but a breeze for the Reds so far. Slot has slotted in seamlessly.

He’s immediately been able to implement his ideas on the pitch and, most importantly, get the best out of the club’s players.

Slot’s work has been particularly focused on the Reds’ midfielders. Both Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai struggled in Jurgen Klopp’s side at times last season.

And the best could be yet to come. Slot could be about to utilise another really talented midfielder in the next few weeks ahead.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool team-mates have reacted to his Instagram post following England’s 2-0 win over Finland on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old won the Player of the Match award for the second time in as many games and has received lots of praise for his England performances.

Up until this point, Trent has never been a nailed-on starter for England but now, under interim boss Lee Carsley, it looks like England fans might be about to see the same elite level from the Reds’ no.66 as Liverpool fans have.

After being deployed as a midfielder with mixed success by Gareth Southgate in this summer’s Euros, it now looks like Carsley prefers to use Trent in his natural position at right-back, where he has dominated on the pitch for Liverpool over the past five years.

Slot promotes youngster to the first-team squad

A ‘brilliant’ Liverpool youngster has earned a promotion to Arne Slot’s first-team squad during the international break.

Things have started stupendously well for Arne Slot at Anfield. Liverpool are off to a perfect start in the Premier League and have played some entertaining football.

Slot has also been able to get the best out of all of his players, with plenty of them thriving at the moment.

One thing we haven’t seen too much from the Dutchman is his work with Liverpool’s youngsters. Slot has preferred to use more established first team players with the Reds playing just one game a week.

But that could be about to change.
