Hong Kong cricket chiefs began plotting an “even bigger and better” Sixes next year, moments after ecstatic Sri Lanka won the tournament following its successful emergence from a seven-year hibernation.
Another sell-out crowd at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground on Sunday watched two semi-finals go down to the wire, before the Sri Lankans survived a late wobble to chase down 73 and deny Pakistan a record sixth title.
After the Mong Kok venue was full for Friday’s opening day, and roughly 85 per cent of tickets were sold for Saturday, organisers believe they can take the competition to a “different level”.
The lone blemish came on the second of three sun-kissed days, when fading light shortened the quarter-final between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates, who were left seething after losing on net run rate.
Burji Shroff, the chairman of Cricket Hong Kong, China [CHKC], said solutions for that issue would be pursued, as his organisation prepared to meet on Tuesday for a debrief.
Shroff also said CHKC would explore the possibility of increasing the capacity at the Sixes’ new home. It was previously staged at Kowloon Cricket Club.
