Hong Kong’s Hayat eyeing franchise chance after power striking in Asian tournament

Date:

Destructive Hong Kong batsman Babar Hayat says the ongoing ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup is doubling as a chance to put his name “in the mix” for franchise cricket around the world.

A typically belligerent 85 from 61 balls in Hong Kong’s opening game against Bangladesh ‘A’ would have made observers take note. However, the 32-year-old’s knock did not prevent his side slipping to a five-wicket defeat, meaning Hong Kong face a “must-win” game against Sri Lanka ‘A’ on Sunday.

Hong Kong posted what Hayat called an “under-par” 150 for eight, before Bangladesh reached their target in 18.2 overs

“We bowled really well in the opening 10 overs, then we didn’t do as well, with misfields and dropped catches, which was why we lost,” Hayat said. “We are confident we can improve in all departments [against Sri Lanka] and get the two points.”

Hayat said the proficient second-string teams of the leading nations, all of which feature a number of full international players, were “completely different from what we have been facing [in associate cricket] … in terms of their bowling, batting and fielding”.

The stiffer opposition, however, means eye-catching performances will pique the interest of franchises from the various tournaments worldwide. Hayat has played in leagues in Canada and Nepal, but has not gained a contract in foreign leagues since cricket resumed after the Covid pandemic.
