Beppe Bergomi feels that there is a double standard for Inter coach Simone Inzaghi and Juventus’s Thiago Motta on squad rotation.
Bergomi contrasted the criticism that the two coaches receive while speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has tinkered with his team a fair bit this season to try and rotate the squad.
The Nerazzurri coach has made efforts to not overuse key players.
Naturally, Inzaghi hardly wants to see any members of his squad start to suffer from fatigue and exhaustion due to playing too much.
The fact that Inter have so many matches is an important consideration for Inzaghi.
The Nerazzurri have Serie A, as well as the expanded Champions League to play in. Then, alongside the domestic cups, Inzaghi also has the Club World Cup next summer to think about.
Bergom Defends Inzaghi: “No One Criticizes Motta For Squad Rotation”
There is one other coach in Serie A who’s in the same boat as Inzaghi.
Like the Inter coach, Juventus’s tactician knows that it will be an incredibly long and gruelling season between domestic commitments, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup.
Therefore, it has not been too much of a surprise to see Motta employ a policy of rotation just like Inzaghi.
But in the view of Bergomi, “Inzaghi’s squad rotation always sparks debate.”
“But does Thiago Motta always put out the same lineup?” the former Inter captain posed. “No.”
“Then, for years everyone talked about Inzaghi’s substitutions,” Bergomi noted.
The Inter coach has become famous for the fact that he often takes players off shortly after they receive yellow cards, in order to not risk picking up a second booking.
This has seen a fair bit of criticism for Inzaghi. Including from Inter fans.
“But then everyone started imitating him, taking off players on yellows.” Begomi noted.
