‘It will be a failure if we don’t win the league’ – Lyon owner John Textor targets Ligue 1 title

You can’t say that Olympique Lyonnais are lacking in ambition. Having rescued themselves from the clutches of a relegation battle last season, Lyon ultimately qualified for the UEFA Europa League, whilst also reaching the final of the Coupe de France.

In the second half of last season, not even eventual Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain earned more points than OL, who were looking to carry that momentum into the current campaign. That hasn’t quite happened just yet.

Lyon already with an eight-point deficit to PSG

Les Gones have a chequered record, having lost their first two games. They do, however, have a win and a draw in their last two games and the signs were particularly encouraging during a 0-0 draw against a stubborn and well-organised RC Lens side.

Prior to that match, John Textor addressed the media, setting the objectives for the current season. The American, currently in talks to sign Everton, has lofty ambitions. “You can have a successful season, even if you fail to reach your objectives,” began Textor, caveating the statement that was about to come.

“It’s a failure if we don’t get back into the Champions League; it’s a failure if we don’t win the league,” he added. No pressure then on Pierre Sage, who already has an eight-point gap to make up to current leaders PSG.
