Italy Star Could Remain In Holding Midfield Role For Inter Milan In Serie A Showdown Vs Juventus

Nicolo Barella could continue playing in holding midfield for Inter Milan in this Sunday’s Serie A showdown with Juventus.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Inter have had something of an injury crisis in midfield since their return from the international break.

Kristjan Asllani has missed out on the Nerazzurri’s last two matches. This has been due to a knock that he took in training.

And then, last Sunday, midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu had to exit the pitch just twelve minutes into Inter’s Serie A clash with Roma.

The problem for the Turk was a thigh issue. It was not overly serious, but enough to see him miss out on Wednesday’s Champions League win over Young Boys.

And Calhanoglu also looks to be very unlikely to be ready for this weekend’s Derby d’Italia clash with Juventus.

Nicolo Barella Could Keep Regista Spot For Inter Vs Juventus

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi opted for a particular solution to cope without Calhanoglu against both Roma and Young Boys.

With Asllani – Calhanoglu’s primary backup – unavailable, the Inter coach moved Nicolo Barella into holding midfield against Roma.

Davide Frattesi came on to take Barella’s place on the left of the midfield trio.

And that is the solution that Inzaghi went with from the start against Young Boys.

The question now is whether the Nerazzurri coach will continue to use Barella as a regista.

And according to the Corriere, that is Inzaghi’s plan.

The Inter coach does not exactly have a litany of options. Asllani would be a natural player in the role, but there are questions about the Albanian’s fitness and readiness for such a key match.

Therefore, the Corriere anticipate, it will once again be Barella.

The former Cagliari midfielder is ready to reprise his role from the matches against Roma and Young Boys.
