INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women’s basketball team opened their season at home with a 72-55 victory over Salem, Saturday afternoon at the KCAC.
IUP jumped out to a strong start, taking an 18-8 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter saw both teams exchange baskets, with IUP scoring 22 points to Salem’s 21. The Hawks shot an impressive 50% from the field for the game, including an outstanding 69.23% in the third quarter.
Transfer Shamia Strayhorn and returner Nyshae’ Weaver were key contributors to the win. Strayhorn led the team with 17 points and shot 7-15 FG. She recorded five rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. Weaver also contributed 17 points and registered a double-double with 13 rebounds. She shot 8-14 FG and had two assists.
Other notable performances came from transfer Ellie Wilkerson, who finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, one assist, and two steals, shooting 60% from the field. Returner Janeira Scott added six points, four rebounds, and four assists in the win.
