Jack Campbell Returns, But Not To Red Wings

Date:

Guess who’s back.

Jack Campbell of the Detroit Red Wings is back. On October 4, the goaltender entered the NHLPA Players Assistance program. It appears that he has returned.

Campbell has played for a few different teams during his NHL career. The 32-year-old has played games for the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Edmonton Oilers.

Despite signing a new contract on July 1st, he has yet to play a game for the Red Wings. Now, it looks like his debut with the team will be prolonged further.

A player cannot be put on waivers while in the program, so this move signifies that he has been cleared to return. The team had not made an official announcement at the time of this writing.

Campbell has had a tumultuous few years. In 2022-23, he signed with the Oilers, and with his newly penned contract, he was expected to be the starting netminder.

He had an up-and-down season, and Stuart Skinner took over as the starter. Skinner did so well that he was named a finalist for the Calder Trophy.

Last season was even worse.

He played in five games, posted a 1-4-0 record, a 4.50 goals against average (GAA), and a .873 save percentage (SV%). He was then sent down to the Bakersfield Condors, where he spent the rest of the season, to mixed results.

Campbell is expected to report to the Grand Rapids Griffins unless another club claims him.
