The Patriots have seen enough to know that Drake Maye is their quarterback for the foreseeable future, but he may not be their quarterback for the final game of the 2024 season.
Head coach Jerod Mayo said at a Monday press conference, via a transcript from the team, that “everything is in consideration” when asked if the team has given any thought to sitting Maye against the Bills in Week 18. Maye was briefly knocked out of Saturday’s loss to the Chargers to be evaluated for a head injury and avoiding any chance of injury that impacted his preparation for the 2025 season would be reason for New England to sit him out.
They could also use it as an opportunity to take a look at sixth-round pick Joe Milton. Milton has been on the roster all season, but has not played. Mayo said Milton seeing action is “absolutely a possibility” before repeating that “all things are still under consideration.”
Mayo did not get asked about the draft implications of any quarterback decision, but the Patriots are now on track to have the first overall pick in April. A loss to Buffalo would assure them of that spot.
