West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph has been one of the individuals nominated for the ICC’s prestigious Men’s Emerging Cricket of the Year award.
Joseph, Gus Atkinson of England, Kamindu Mendis of Sri Lanka, and Pakistan’s Saim Ayub were announced as the first shortlist for its 2024 awards.
The 25-year-old Joseph took 29 wickets in eight Tests and hit the spotlight in January when he took seven wickets in the second Test at the Gabba with an injured toe to bowl West Indies to their first Test victory in Australia in 27 years.
Playing his first Test series, Joseph produced an incredible performance, claiming 13 wickets from two Tests, including two five-wicket hauls. He became the first West Indian in 17 years to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut.
Joseph also played an essential role in the home series against Bangladesh and South Africa, finishing with 12 wickets from three outings.
No players from the West Indies Women’s team have been selected for the Women’s Emerging Cricket of the Year award; the nominees include South African all-rounder Annerie Dercksen, Scotland’s Saskia Horley, India’s Shreyanka Patil, and Ireland’s Freya Sargent.
The 2024 ICC awards comprise 12 individual awards. Between Dec. 28 and 30, the ICC revealed shortlists in nine categories.
A specialist panel of cricket writers and broadcasters has chosen the shortlist nominees based on on-field performances and overall achievements in international cricket throughout the calendar year.
Fans can now vote for their favorite emerging players at www.icc-cricket.com. As the ICC reveals further nominees, other categories will be unlocked.
Fan voting results, together with selections made by a prominent panel of international cricket media and the ICC Voting Academy, to identify the winner in each of the shortlisted categories.
Other categories included in the ICC Awards 2024 are the ICC Men’s and Women’s Associate Cricketers of the Year and the ICC Umpire of the Year.
In addition, the ICC Voting Academy will also select five ICC Teams of the Year, identifying the standout XIs across men’s and women’s international cricket during the year.
Winners of the ICC Awards 2024 will be announced in late January 2025.
