Major winners Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman join American Express golf field

Date:

A day after losing the No. 1 player in the world from its field, The American Express announced two major championship winners from 2023 are expected to play in the tournament next week.

Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, and Brian Harman, the 2023 British Open winner, have both committed to the field of the PGA Tour event in La Quinta on Jan. 16-19.

Clark, seventh in the world ranking, and Harman, 30th in that ranking, give The American Express 10 of the top 30 players in the world and 19 of the top 50 for the $8.8 million event on three courses in La Quinta.

Clark’s commitment comes just one day after Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world and three-time PGA Tour player of the year, withdrew from the tournament. Scheffler said in a social media post that he needs more time for his hand to heal following surgery caused by a Christmas cooking accident that left glass in his hand.

Wyndham Clark tees off on the 11th hole at La Quinta Country Club during The American Express in La Quinta, Calif., Jan. 20, 2023.

Clark is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour, including a one-shot victory in the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club over Rory McIlroy. Clark’s more recent win was the 2024 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Harman is also a three-time winner on the tour. His 2023 British Open title came on Royal Liverpool in England.

Clark and Harman join a field that includes world No. 2 Xander Schauffele, winner of the PGA Championship and the British Open in 2024.

“That’s eight of the top 25 in the world, a number of past major champions, highlighted by Xander Schauffele, who won two of the four major championships last year,” said Pat McCabe, executive director of The American Express.

Other major champions in the field include two-time major winners Justin Thomas and Zach Johnson and PGA Championship winner Jason Day. Other past champions of The American Express in the field include Jason Dufner, Si Woo Kim and two-time desert winner Bill Haas. Other top players in the field include Billy Horschel, Sam Burns, Tom Kim and Tony Finau.

The tournament will be played at the Pete Dye Stadium Course and Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West and La Quinta Country Club, all in La Quinta.
