Man dies after vehicle strikes electric pole on Corpus Christi’s Southside

Date:

A single-vehicle traffic accident early Sunday took the life of one man after the vehicle he was driving crashed into an electric pole.

At 2:21 a.m., police officers were dispatched to a single-vehicle accident in the 7000 block of Wooldridge Road, arriving to find that a white passenger car had struck the electric pole, causing it to snap, according to a news release published by Corpus Christi Police Department senior officer Jennifer Collier.

Police say the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and that the front seat passenger was able to exit the car. However, the driver, an unknown male, could not leave the vehicle and died of injuries that he suffered at the site.

The incident was not a homicide, Lt. Eryca Gonzalez said in a written statement.

Both vehicle occupants were 21 years old, police said.

The passenger was transported to a local hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening, police say.

Traffic Unit investigators found that the car was traveling west on Wooldridge Road at a high rate of speed through a green light at the intersection of Rodd Field Road. Other than the high speed, police say they don’t know what caused the vehicle to lose control and crash into the pole.

Senior officer Antonio Contreras confirmed by written statement Monday that investigators are currently working to determine the driver’s speed.

Police could not confirm whether the car was traveling in the center or right lane of Wooldridge Road, or whether the driver intended to continue straight or make a turn, he said.
