Manchester United drew 3-3 to FC Porto in the second game of the Europa League campaign.
The Red Devils enjoyed a promising start, leading 2-0 in 20 minutes.
Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund got onto the scoresheet after poor shot-stopping from Diogo Costo.
Erik ten Hag’s United have a pattern of conceding goals immediately after scoring.
They did not break that pattern as mistakes at the back helped Porto bring the score to parity before half-time.
The hosts repeatedly exploited United’s shaky defence. Their persistence paid off when Samu Omorodion scored Porto’s third goal.
Bruno Fernandes showed a poor example of leadership and was sent off for dangerous play in the 81st minute.
Harry Maguire, who came on as a substitute in the 79th minute, scored in injury time to salvage a point from what could have been a disastrous defeat.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana – 6/10
Onana made a brilliant save to deny Mazraoui a potential own goal. Unfortunately, he couldn’t do anything about the rebound. Not at fault for the other two goals as well.
Another night where his defence let him down.
Noussair Mazraoui – 5/10
The right-back came close to scoring at the wrong end. He needed to be more tidy with possession and looked exhausted at times.
Matthijs de Ligt – 2/10
Terrible display from De Ligt.
His botched clearance set the tone and losing the aerial duel for Porto’s second goal was a glaring error. He was again beaten by Samu Omorodion for the third goal.
Lisandro Martinez – 2/10
The Argentine struggled with basic defensive duties.
He was unexpectedly slow to react after Onana’s impressive save, allowing Pepe to reduce the deficit. He was outpaced for the third goal and rightly removed in the second half.
Diogo Dalot – 4/10
He was far too weak in duels and was often caught out of position in transitions.
He looked much more positive in the attack than he did in his disaster showing against Tottenham on Sunday.
Casemiro – 5/10
Not the best way to return to his old stomping ground. He made a few good passes forward but failed to provide solidarity to the defence.
Christian Eriksen – 7/10
The veteran was instrumental in the attack, providing two assists and playing a crucial role in Hojlund’s goal. He was one of the few who showed intent to give his best.
Bruno Fernandes – 2/10
Fernandes had a disastrous outing, earning his second red card in four days. His reckless behaviour was disappointing for a captain, especially while already on a yellow card.
Amad Diallo – 4/10
Amad was not much involved in the first half and never looked threatening in the final third. He cannot complain if he is benched for the next game.
Marcus Rashford – 8/10
United’s best player with a goal and an assist early in the first half. His direct running caused havoc on the left flank. He terrified Porto’s right back with his dribbling but was unfortunate to be hooked off at the break.
Rasmus Hojlund – 7/10
His initial direct running created opportunities, but he struggled to maintain momentum as the match progressed.
Nice to see him scoring his first goal of the season with a move he started by winning the aerial duel at the half-line.
Substitutes
Alejandro Garnacho – 7/10
Garnacho came on at half-time even when he was not fully fit. He pulled off a brilliant save from Costa late in the game.
Joshua Zirkzee – 4/10
Not a striker.
He attempted zero shots in his 20-minute cameo when United were behind.
Antony – 5/10
The Brazil international came on for Amad but didn’t add any firepower.
Harry Maguire – 7/10
Maguire rescued a point for United on the day when he was dropped from the England national team.
Jonny Evans – 6/10
He came on alongside Maguire and did a better job than Martinez.
