Liverpool’s biggest rival on the pitch for the last five years has been Manchester City, but now it is City’s off-the-pitch actions that are making headlines.
On Monday, a judge ruled in Manchester City’s legal case against the Premier League and both parties celebrated victories of sorts.
Both City and the Premier League released statements essentially claiming victory and some change will come about to the league’s associated party transaction (APT) rules.
This ruling is essentially a prelude to the much larger legal battle between the two parties, that sees City facing 115 charges from the Premier League.

Manchester City accused of trying to run the Premier League
Following on from the ruling that was delivered on Monday, City are now being accused of trying to run the Premier League themselves by other clubs in the competition.
According to a report by The Telegraph, City executives sent an email to the 19 other Premier League clubs following the league’s statement on Monday’s ruling, essentially dismissing the Premier League’s summary of the tribunal’s findings.
The email also claimed that the entirety of the Premier League’s ATP rules were now obsolete and invited clubs to talk directly to City, ignoring the leadership of the Premier League.
In the email clubs were told to ignore any advice from the Premier League’s counsel and to assume that all APT rules are now invalid.
Although the APT rules will undergo amendments following the ruling, the tribunal found its basic structure to be legally sound.
What Man City vs Premier League could mean for Liverpool
Liverpool were one of a number of clubs to be called as witnesses for the Premier League at the tribunal and City’s email will have likely widened divisions between the two clubs.
Whilst the tribunals rulings on APT could have some effect on Liverpool, the outcome of the Premier League’s larger legal action against City will be of more interest.
The case is ongoing and an initial 115 charges were brought against City in February 2023 following a four-year investigation.
It is alleged that City breached the Premier League’s financial rules a number of times between 2009 and 2018.
If found guilty on all counts the resulting punishment could be monumental for City but also for Liverpool, who could stand to benefit depending on the punishment decided.
Liverpool supporters will be keeping a close eye on the ongoing legal battle between Manchester City and the Premier League whilst also hoping that the Reds can get one over on their rivals in the league this season.
