Marietta College head men’s basketball coach Jon VanderWal has announced the hiring of Pete Smith as the Pioneer’s assistant coach.
“We are extremely excited to have Pete join our staff,” said VanderWal. “Pete was a great D3 player for a really good program and has gained valuable coaching experience the past four years at Adrian College. He exudes all the qualities we look for when hiring an assistant coach and he will fit in well with PioNation. He’s already hit the ground running and we are confident he will add a lot of value to our staff.”
Smith comes to Marietta with a wealth of knowledge of NCAA Division III basketball. He recently completed a successful stint as assistant coach at Adrian (Mich.) College where he was highly involved in recruiting of prospective student athletes as well as player development.
Smith had a successful collegiate career as a student-athlete, starting at Hope College and then transferring to Trine University for his final two seasons. While at Trine, he was named team captain and was an All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association selection in both seasons. During his senior campaign, Smith helped lead the Thunder to the MIAA regular season championship and was named the conference MVP. He was also named to the NABC and D3hoops All-Great Lakes Region team.
Originally from Bristol, Indiana, Smith graduated from Trine in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. He then completed his master’s degree in Sport Management at Adrian College in 2023.
