Michigan basketball adds commitment from New Zealand standout

Date:

Michigan basketball picked up a commitment from a top international prospect on Wednesday. Oscar Goodman, from Opunake, New Zealand, pledged to the Wolverines, the program’s second commitment for the 2025 class in five days.

Goodman is a 6-foot-8 forward who made the five-man all-star team at the FIBA under-17 World Cup this summer. He is training at the NBA Global Academy in Australia.

In the FIBA event in Turkey, he helped underdog New Zealand reach the semifinals before losing to eventual champion United States. Over seven games, he averaged 17 points, 6.3 rebounds, and three assists per game.

Michigan secured a commitment from Winters Grady, a top-100 prospect in the 2025 class, on Friday.

Later that day, new Michigan head coach Dusty May spoke about recruiting. “We like where we are,” he said, noting that NCAA rules prevented him from discussing unsigned prospects. “We have a staff that’s very connected, and they work really, really well together. And then you factor in how aggressive our players are in recruiting and wanting good players to join this program — it’s been fun to be in the recruiting fox hole with this group.”

“I chose Michigan because of how Coach May saw me fitting into their play style,” Goodman told ESPN. “I really liked the ‘we do everything for each other’ environment. I was big on having great team chemistry and could tell all the guys enjoyed being around each other.”

Goodman said he plans on representing New Zealand again this summer. He is described as a versatile player who can shoot and pass.
