Mitchell boys golf finishes seventh at Huron Invite

Aug. 29—HURON — Another strong outing by Everett Morrison helped the Mitchell High School boys golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Huron Invite on Thursday at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

Bolstered by four birdies as part of a 2-under front nine, Morrison carded a 2-over 74 for the day, finishing in a five-way tie for seventh place individually. The event featured 13 schools and 77 golfers.

Asher Dannenbring recorded a 5-over 77 round and was in a six-way tie for 20th. Also factoring into Mitchell’s team score for the day were Marshall Widstrom (79) and Carter McCormick (81), while Brady Reiners (81) and Jordan Meyerink (90) were also on the course for the Kernels.

For the day, Mitchell carded 311 strokes, which checked in 17 strokes back of event winner Watertown. The Arrows finished with a team score of 6-over 294 to edge out Pierre (295) and Harrisburg (296) for the title. O’Gorman (299) and Yankton (305) rounded out the top five, with Brandon Valley (309) the final team to slot in ahead of Mitchell.

Individually, there were four rounds of even par or better, paced by Pierre’s Sawyer Sonnenschein at 4-under 68 to take home the individual title. Harrisburg’s Charlie Swift was right behind with a 3-under 69, and Watertown’s Max Stemwedel carded a 2-under 70. O’Gorman’s Taten Mauney shot an even-par 72.

Mitchell will face off against Yankton for the 2024 edition of the Marchand Cup on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Fox Run Golf Course.
