Montgomery nonprofit leader sets new basketball free throw record

Date:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A Montgomery man has set a new world record for the most basketball free throws made in a single day.

Matt Bostic made 21,000 free throws in 24 hours. It was shy of his 22,000 goal but enough to break the current world record, which he also holds.

That 22,000 goal was not chosen randomly. It holds real meaning for Bostic, as does the challenge. Thee number symbolizes the 22,000 people incarcerated in the past year. The nonfit Life House aims to fight recidivism and help formerly insurrected people get educated and get jobs.

Bostic is president of Life House University, a one-year workforce development campus that helps such people get jobs and a second chance at life. It has campuses in Alabama and Louisiana.

“This weekend was about just getting it out in the community and letting them know that we’re here and we’re fighting to really handle three of the nation’s biggest issues right now: the opioid crisis, homelessness, workforce development. Life House does all of that, and we’re providing those services for everyone that we come in contact with,” Bostic said.

Bostic, who is also team chaplain for the Birmingham Squadron, has played basketball his whole life and has spoken out about his excitement at being able to combine his athletic passion for his faith to help those who need help reentering society.

These passions helped him set the previous 24-hour free throw record at 20,500. He also set the world record for the most three-pointers in 24 hours in 2005, making 6,272 shots.

Bostic also set a $200,000 goal for his “Shoot for Life House” campaign to raise money for Life House’s housing facilities. According to the donation page, it’s raised more than $66,900 as of Monday.
