KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- There are strong speculations that Rohit Sharma might be up for sale in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
- Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals are the two favourites to land the former MI captain.
- There are chances that another IPL franchise might move for Rohit Sharma.
The IPL 2025 is set to witness a mega auction for the first time since 2022. Several big names will be up for sale, and it is highly likely that Rohit Sharma too will be up for auction. This is especially likely because of the captaincy turmoil that took place at the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024, after Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as the leader of the franchise before the start of IPL 2024. There have been rumours that Lucknow Super Giants or Delhi Capitals are the two most likely franchises to jump for Rohit Sharma at the IPL 2025 auction. However, Punjab Kings too might be in the mix.
In a recent episode of The Rao Podcast on YouTube, Punjab Kings Head of Cricket Development Sanjay Bangar hinted at going for Rohit Sharma if he comes up for sale in the IPL 2024 auction. He said that it all depends on the money they would have at their disposal. He also believed that Rohit would go for a high price, if the former MI captain comes into the auction.
“It all depends on whether we have the money in our pockets. If Rohit comes in the auction, I certainly believe, he is going to go for a high price,” Bangar said.
Punjab Kings going for Rohit Sharma might be a sensible move for Punjab Kings. This is because their captain for IPL 2024, Shikhar Dhawan recently announced his retirement from all forms of the sport and won’t be available anymore. They need a solid captaincy option and who better than Rohit Sharma to replace him.
We Have To See If MI Release Rohit Sharma: Sanjiv Goenka
There were rumours that Lucknow Super Giants have kept a massive Rs 50 crore aside for Rohit Sharma at the IPL 2025 auction. In a recent event, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka rubbished these reports calling them baseless. However, he said they would see if Rohit Sharma makes himself available for the auction.
“Tell me one thing. Does anybody know if Rohit Sharma is available at the action? The entire rumour is baseless. We have to see if MI release Rohit Sharma. Then, we have to see if Rohit makes himself available for bidding. Even if he does, how will you manage to get the other 22 players if you spend half of your entire budget on one player?,” said Goenka.
