Date:

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 26-year-old El Paso woman is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter after allegedly running a red light and killing her passenger back in April in East Central El Paso, according to El Paso Police.

Police say Elizabeth Olivia Chagra-Nichols, 26, and her passenger Derek Omar Limon Sparks, 26, were traveling southbound in a KIA Forte at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, April 14, on the 5800 block of Paisano.

At the same time, a 50-year-old woman was traveling westbound in an Oldsmobile on the 5700 block of Trowbridge.

Police say Chagra-Nichols ran the red light at the intersection, causing a collision. All occupants were then transported to a local hospital.

On April 20, Sparks passed away from the injuries he sustained in the crash and the Medical Examiner’s Office contacted investigators.

On August 23, Chagra-Nichols was taken into custody and was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault after the investigation revealed she had run the red light, according to El Paso Police.

Chagra-Nichols was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a total bond of $150,000.
