Police: Man with knife barricaded himself inside Anchorage apartment and tried to set it on fire

Date:

Oct. 14—Update, 6:55 a.m., Monday:

Anchorage police identified a man accused of trying to set a Government Hill apartment on fire as 34-year-old Patrick Moran, who was described in 911 reports Saturday night as holding a large knife, hitting cars, and slashing tires on vehicles in the parking lot.

Officers apprehended Moran using “less lethal” options including a K-9, police said. He was treated at a local hospital and later remanded at the Anchorage jail on charges of first-degree arson, third-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment, they said.

Original story:

Anchorage police said they apprehended a man this weekend who was reportedly destroying property and caused a disturbance before trying to set a Government Hill apartment on fire.

Officers responded to the 900 block of Richardson Vista Road at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday for a report of a man with a knife who was destroying property and shouting, according to an online statement from the Anchorage Police Department.

Upon their arrival, officers contacted the man, who then barricaded himself inside an apartment with the knife and began to set the residence on fire, police said.

Officers helped other residents evacuate, police said. The man confronted the officers, and they apprehended him “using less lethal options,” police said.

It was not immediately clear whether any charges were filed after the incident. The man was not identified in the police department’s update.

The Anchorage Fire Department responded to the scene, and Richardson Vista Road was closed for nearly two hours, police said.
