Purdue coach Matt Painter on challenges Northern Kentucky presented

WEST LAFAYETTE — Daniel Jacobsen’s second game in Purdue basketball’s starting lineup lasted only 60 seconds Friday night.
Jacobsen stumbled over a defender and fell in the lane on the Boilermakers’ second offensive possessions against Northern Kentucky at Mackey Arena. The 7-4 freshman grabbed at his right knee or shin area, then was helped to the sideline by teammates. He walked to the locker room without assistance.
He returned to the Purdue bench area several minutes later, emerging from the tunnel on crutches and with an ice wrap below the knee area. He did not leave the bench area soon after when the rest of the team huddled during a timeout.
Purdue coach Matt Painter said he was told Jacobsen suffered a “lower leg injury.” He said Jacobsen will have an MRi and/or X-rays on Saturday and more might be known by that evening.
Jacobsen removed the ice pack late in the first half. He is sitting on the bench wearing a warm up pullover in the second half.
Jacobsen debuted with a strong performance last Monday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. He posted 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists over 15 minutes.
Will Berg subbed in for Jacobsen, with Raleigh Burgess and Caleb Furst also playing first-half minutes at center. Berg also started the second half in Jacobsen’s place.
