Real Madrid target met Barcelona’s sporting director in February – report

Barcelona have emerged as a fresh entrant in the race to sign Real Madrid target Alphonso Davies next summer.

The Canadian international is one of Real Madrid’s top defensive targets for the summer of 2025, with his current contract at Bayern Munich expiring at the end of the season.

However, the recent interest from Barcelona and Manchester United does complicate things, to an extent, even though Los Blancos remain the firm favourites to sign the player.

Davies’s agent met Barcelona official earlier in the year

A recent report from Jijantes has offered an update on the Davies saga, suggesting that Barcelona’s interest in the player is nothing new.

That is because Davies’s agent Nedal Househ had held a summit with Barcelona sporting director Deco on February 15, which was about eight months ago.

Househ had also met the Real Madrid representatives a day before, perhaps over the prospects of a 2024 summer move to Santiago Bernabeu.

However, despite Real Madrid’s interest, the club were not able to sanction a move for Davies in the summer, especially after bringing in Kylian Mbappe with a hefty salary package.

The Spanish giants had a difficult time negotiating with Bayern Munich, who had no desire to let the player leave on a cut-price deal.

The road ahead

However, things have changed since and Bayern’s leverage over Davies is diminishing with each passing day. The player, in fact, will be eligible to sign the pre-contract agreement after the turn of the year.

This will allow Real Madrid to try and convince the Canadian to join the club on a free transfer next summer. However, it remains to be seen how much of a hurdle can Barcelona pose, as far as the pursuit of Davies is concerned.

Although the Catalans are still going through economic turmoil, the club might just want to turn all their attention to signing Davies, though it is unclearly where exactly he will fit into the team.
