‘Stars of Science’, an edutainment TV initiative by Qatar Foundation, empowers Arab innovators to create technological solutions that improve health, enhance lifestyles and protect the environment in their communities.
The edutainment reality TV show Stars of Science, where Arab innovators compete to create tech solutions for their communities, has been a key force in promoting entrepreneurship and technological advancement for the past 16 years. Since its debut in 2009 under the Qatar Foundation for Science, Education and Community Development (QF), the show has played an important role in building a thriving startup ecosystem, aligning with Qatar’s emergence as a hub for research and innovation.
At the Web Summit Qatar 2024, Qatar announced a $1bn commitment to startups, reinforcing its aim to become a global tech hub. This drive continued with a 9bn QAR investment in technology and AI, unveiled at the Qatar Economic Forum 2024, underscoring the country’s dedication to fostering opportunities for innovators.
These economic efforts will further support initiatives like Stars of Science, the longest-running Arabic edutainment show, which has consistently turned scientific research into market-ready innovations. Over 15 seasons, the show has championed 168 innovators and produced countless prototypes and patents in fields like technology, AI, sustainability and biomedical research.
Alumni success stories demonstrate the impact Stars of Science has had. Syrian innovator Majed Lababidi, a third-season participant, has launched several startups and is now Director of Ecosystem Integration at Alchemist Accelerator-Doha. Hassan Al-Balawi from Saudi Arabia, a season seven participant, introduced his startup WakeCap Technologies on the show, which has since secured funding and formed global partnerships to improve workplace safety using AI.
The show’s influence extends beyond the screen, fostering a cultural shift towards innovation and entrepreneurship. Qatar’s efforts, including world-class research centres, top universities at QF’s Education City and tech hubs like Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), have created an ecosystem that supports Arab talent and drives digital transformation.
Alumnus Mohammed Al-Qassabi from Qatar said: “Stars of Science shines as a beacon of inspiration and innovation, especially in the Arab world. It is unparalleled in its dedication to nurturing the potential of young minds in science and technology. For over a decade and a half, the programme has consistently proven its transformative impact and enduring effectiveness.”
Stars of Science will air its latest season until October 19, 2024, on five regional channels and online.
