Report: Barcelona and Atletico Madrid green-light La Liga clash in Miami

A few years ago, the idea of shifting a La Liga fixture overseas was met with severe criticism, not only by fans but also by clubs themselves. However, Times change and it is no longer as impossible.

In their attempt to promote the brand value of Spanish football abroad, La Liga are trying to move Barcelona’s game against Atletico Madrid later this year to Miami instead of Montjuic and negotiations have been ongoing for a while now.

The Catalans don’t see the idea with bad eyes and were reported to be open to the possibility this time around, especially given the improved relations between Barcelona and La Liga.

The details

As revealed in a recent update by Miguel Rico (h/t FCBWorld), Barcelona see the idea to be ideal as it would bring huge financial gains beyond what they could earn from a high-paying friendly match.

If reports earlier this week are to be believed, that figure could stand at close to €6 million as the Blaugrana demand compensation for their losses in terms of ticket sales if the game is shifted.

The Spanish journalist also furthers that Atletico Madrid will also receive a large sum for playing in the USA and do not care if the game is held at Montjuic or Miami.

With both teams giving the green light, it is now in the home stretch, with only FIFA’s approval remaining.

While Barcelona will indeed lose the home advantage in the process, La Liga have reportedly announced the arrangement of flights to take fans to Miami with more planes arranged for the Blaugrana faithful.

Moreover, the Azulgrana already have a good fan following in the United States after their recent pre-season tours and one can expect Cules to flock to the stadium in large numbers, potentially handing a larger home advantage.
