Inter Milan and AC Milan have a plan to make use of the existing San Siro as part of potential new stadium plans in the area.
This according to Milan-based newspaper Il Giorno, via FCInterNews.
Today was yet another significant day in the long soap opera that has been Inter and Milan’s efforts to build a new stadium.
Last Friday, the two clubs definitively rejected the idea of staying at a renovated version of the San Siro.
Even with renovations to the iconic stadium, the clubs feel that it wouldn’t be sufficient to their needs.
However, it remains very much up in the air what the clubs’ plan will be.
Reports in recent weeks have indicated that Inter and Milan could build a stadium togehter.
Over the last year and change the clubs have drifted apart.
Since it became clear that the clubs cannot demolish the San Siro to make way for a new stadium, they have each focused on separate projects.
Inter have been working in the commune of Rozzano. Milan, meanwhile, have already purchased land in the San Donato area.
However, with the arrival of Oaktree Capital as Inter owners, the two clubs are ready to cooperate. They are now likely to build a new stadium together.
The question, however, would be where this will be.
Inter & Milan Could Repurpose San Siro As Part Of Stadium Plans – On One Condition
Inter and Milan could of course decide to build a single stadium together in either Rozzano or San Donato.
This would allow the clubs to split the costs on a project that they have respectively already been making strides towards.
But another solution has emerged in the last couple weeks.
This would be for the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri to build a new stadium in the San Siro, adjacent to the existing stadium.
However, a lot would be dependent on the status of the existing stadium.
The thing that has pushed the clubs away from the area to begin with has been an injunction against demolishing the second tier of the San Siro.
This would take effect in 2025, the 75th anniversary of the second tier’s construction.
Since Inter and Milan cannot tear down the entire stadium due to the second tier being declared culturally valuable, they cannot simply demolish the San Siro and build a more modern stadium.
However, the clubs could build a new stadium adjacent to the San Siro. And in this case, they would want to use the existing stadium as part of the project.
Inter and Milan could tear down much of the San Siro, but leave the iconic second ring intact.
In this case, they would convert the stadium into club museums and commercial developments. This would allow them to generate more revenues.
But that would require the clubs having the permission to do so.
In a meeting with the city today, it emerged that if the San Siro is in private ownership, then they could potentially do so.
