India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma has provided an update on the recovery of fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Rohit mentioned that it is uncertain whether Shami will be able to play a role in the Test series in Australia starting next month.
“To be honest, it is difficult to make a call on him for the Australia series. He had a setback and had swelling in his knees. That put him back a little bit and had to start again. He’s at the NCA (National Cricket Academy) with doctors and physios,” said the India captain.
India’s next Test assignment is the three-match home series against New Zealand, before the Border Gavaskar Trophy Down Under, which will be contested over a five-Test series for the first time.
“We don’t want to bring undercooked Shami to Australia. We are keeping our fingers crossed,” Rohit added.
Shami has not played since the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November 2023. He was included in the squad for India’s two-Test tour of South Africa in December 2023, pending fitness approval. However, the BCCI medical team did not clear Shami for the tour.
India are currently on top of the WTC standings, with a total of eight Tests left to play — three at home against the Kiwis and five in Australia.
The WTC final is scheduled for June next year.
