Simone Inzaghi on Inter’s win over Red Star: “We played a great game”

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi has praised his side’s performance against Red Star, as the Nerazzurri picked up a 4-0 win in the Champions League.

Inter put on a convincing performance today at the San Siro, winning in the competition for the first time this season and it was due to goals from Hakan Calhanoglu, Mehdi Taremi, Lautaro Martinez and Marko Arnautovic that the Nerazzurri got all three points in a game that could have been a potential banana skin.

Inzaghi was pleased with the perforrmance, which was probably Inter’s most dominant this season – by the showing and by the margin. He spoke to the press after the game and said (via TMW):

“President Marotta spoke about it in the pre-match, we played a great game: the team was good on the pitch, we knew we would find an opponent who would defend with many men. We were good at staying calm because the second goal didn’t come, then everything was easier.”

He spoke about avoiding a potential upset and said: “The team’s response, everyone expected the victory over Red Star but it is something to be achieved. These are tricky matches, we had to give continuity to the good performance in Manchester. It is a long journey, with difficulties.”

He also spoke about the fitness of Lautaro Martinez, who was in some discomfort at the end of the tie.

“I saw in the final minutes that he continued to touch his thigh, he told me that he took the classic knee and there shouldn’t be any problems.”
