Smyrna DUI checkpoint results in multiple arrests

A DUI checkpoint in Smyrna on Dec. 27 resulted in a handful of arrests and dozens of tickets, according to Delaware State Police.

Five people were arrested on charges of driving under the influence out of the 472 vehicles that passed through late that night, and 32 traffic tickets were issued, police said.

Nine DUI arrests in total have come from police checkpoints in Delaware this year. There have been a total of 14 arrests from these checkpoints. A checkpoint in Milford in September was the first since 2019.

Drivers with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or more can be convicted of driving under the influence. First-time offenders could incur a fine of $500-$1,500 and get up to a year in prison.

Drivers could also lose their licenses for one to two years. According to the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, 31 traffic deaths were related to drugs or alcohol in 2023.
