Terre Haute South junior Avery Cassell wasn’t pleased with her second-round score of 93 Saturday — which combined with her first-round 87 on Friday left her in 63rd place at 180 — at the end of the IHSAA girls golf state finals played at Carmel’s Prairie View Golf Club.
That 36-over-par total wasn’t what the talented Cassell imagined for herself in the week leading up to the 52nd annual tournament.
“Very disappointed in my outcome,” she told the Tribune-Star via text afterward. “Did not play how I wanted, but it’s not the end and I have plenty of time to learn from my mistakes.”
Cassell said her shots off the tee weren’t bad Saturday.
But the rest of her game? Definitely not up to the high standard she sets for herself.
“Everything else I just could not get going,” Cassell assessed. “Just struggled a lot with my irons and my putting wasn’t very good either.”
Last season, when the Braves qualified for the state finals as a team, Cassell shot a 36-hole total of 177 on the same course. That tied her for 64th individually. South, coached by Cara Stuckey, came in 17th as a team in 2023.
This season, Cassell tied with teammate Gabbie Blakeney for low score at 72 in the Northview Sectional at Forest Park in Brazil (although Blakeney won a playoff on the first hole to earn medalist honors).
Then Cassell carded an 81 in the Washington Regional at Country Oaks Golf Course in Montgomery to qualify for the state finals again.
Cassell told the Tribune-Star that she remains undecided on her college status.
Elsewhere in the 2024 state finals, Zionsville freshman Taylor Snively was medalist with a two-day score of 144 (72-72) and Zionsville captured the team title with a 627, five strokes better than runner-up Noblesville (632).
