State Golf First Round begins with girls tourney

The rain and wind late last week and weekend delayed the start of the KHSAA State First Round golf tournament at Hopkinsville Country Club.

The boys First Round was supposed to be Monday, but wet conditions throughout the state moved the boys competition to Wednesday.

That means the girls First Round will be up first at Hopkinsville Country Club on Tuesday.

The top three teams and top 15 individuals from the Hopkinsville First Round will advance to the KHSAA State Golf Tournament next week in Bowling Green. Golf Regions 1-4 are playing at Hopkinsville CC.

Daviess County advanced to the Girls State First Round as the Region 2 champion for a third straight year. The Lady Panthers dominated with a 319 last Wednesday at The Pearl Club. Second place Henderson County shot 359.

Claire Reynolds led the way with a 6-over 78. Alexa Salamah shot 79, Briley Billingsley shot 80 and Baylie Billingsley shot 82.

Adelynn Moorman from Breckinridge County was the individual medalist from Region 2 with a 77. Moorman will be trying to advance to the Girls State Golf Tournament in Bowling Green for a second straight year.

Breckinridge County teammate Maggie Blair also advanced to the State First Round.

Owensboro Catholic’s Hannah Robbins qualified as an individual to advance to State First Round.

Ohio County’s Maggie Graves and Briar Vender advanced to the State First Round. Muhlenberg County’s Gracie Galyen also advanced to the State First Round.

Daviess County will be teeing off from 8 a.m.-8:36 a.m.

BOYS

Owesnboro High School won the Region 2 team championship for the first time since 1983 at Owensboro Country Club. The Red Devils earned a trip to the State First Round boys tournament Wednesday at Hopkinsville Country Club.

Owensboro’s Jax Malone was the individual medalist at region with a 2-under par 70. Will Rickard (75), Nolan Warren (77) and Cole Crews (78) also scored for Owensboro.

OHS is looking to be one of the three teams that advances past the first round to the KHSAA Boys State Golf Tournament the following week in Bowling Green.

Daviess County was second on the boys side and also qualified for the State First Round.

Daviess County shot a 322 to edge out Owensboro Catholic at 323.

Grant Broughton led DC and was second overall with 71. Logan Mewes (83), Collin Reynolds (83), and Walker Ferguson (85) also scored for Daviess County.

Owensboro Catholic’s John William-Wathen and Luke Estes qualified for State First Round as individuals.

Muhlenberg County’s Luke Hardin and Cy Tudor, Ohio County’s Shawn Cotton, and Hancock County’s Dec Lewko were the other individual qualifiers from the area for State First Round.
