Stroudsburg golfer Hunter Probst places 5th in District Championship, heads back to states

Date:

HELLERTOWN — This isn’t the first time Hunter Probst will compete in the PIAA state golf championship. Or the second time. Or even the third time.

Stroudsburg High School’s senior golfer has traveled to the states every year of his high school career, including 2024, when Probst shot two-over-par to place 5th in the District 11 golf championship, punching his ticket to Penn State.

Probst, along with every golfer except Northampton’s Gavin Pychinka, shot over par at Steel Club in Hellertown, a course that gave everyone in the district problems. He was in the danger zone as only the top-six golfers qualified for states, but a birdie on the 15th hole and par on the final three holes sealed the deal.

“I tried not to let a bad shot take over,” Probst said. “I just stuck with it.”

Head coach Pete Sobrinski talked about how Probst can “scramble with the best of them” when it comes to managing a difficult course. He was especially impressed with how he handled a difficult par-3 hole to keep pace.

“That’s the kind of grinding and scrambling I’m telling you he’s capable of,” Sobrinski said. “He did it when he had to do it. Maybe he didn’t have his best game on Tuesday, but he came in, and he got it done. That’s the difference.”

When asked about his mentality toward the state championship, Probst said his goals are to “keep the ball in play, number one. And I’d say try to limit the mistakes.”

The PIAA individual golf championships will be held Oct. 21-22 at Penn State on the White Course.
