Sturgis tennis ends regular season with win over Edwardsburg

STURGIS — The Sturgis tennis team hosted Edwardsburg in its final home Wolverine matchup of the season on Wednesday. The Trojans won the match 6-2 with plenty of close and hard-fought matches.

It was also the final home match for Sturgis senior captain George Ebert. He won his match over Stephen Linton at first singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0. For the year, Ebert is 16-3 on the season and won each of his conference matchups at Augspurger Courts this season.

Carter Oswald won his match as well at second singles, it came over Logan Summy by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Sturgis also won with Brody Currier at third singles, he beat Brady Leep with scores of 6-4, 6-4. Fourth singles saw Logan White fall to Brady Hoffman 6-3, 6-0.

Sturgis got a strong win at first doubles as well. Alex Cypher and Andrew Scheske beat Keston McGuire and Brandon VanOverberghe by scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Easton and Cooper Barkby won their match at second doubles, beat Noah Coleman and Ethan Lapman 7-6 (3) and 6-1.

Nixson Orpilla and Jonathan Bickle picked up a 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2 win at fourth doubles. The SHS team of Brayden Bibb and Dominic Brown were upended by Kade Hoven and Bryce Linton 6-3, 6-4 at third doubles.

On Monday, Sturgis won a 7-1 match over Three Rivers on the road.

Sturgis swept the singles with Ebert and Oswald each winning 6-0, 6-0 while Currier won 6-0, 6-1. White won by default.

The Barkbys won 6-2, 6-2 at second doubles. Bibb and Brown won 7-6 (4), 6-1 and Orpilla/Bickle won at fourth doubles 7-6 (1), 6-2. The top team of Cypher and Scheske dropped a 6-3, 6-0 match to Alex and Jay Nowak.

Back on Saturday, Sturgis traveled to play at Grand Rapids West Catholic. The Trojans finished third in the tournament behind host West Catholic and Portland.

Next up for the Sturgis tennis team is the Wolverine Conference Championships held Wednesday at Vicksburg.
