Super50 Cup: Both sides forfeit final with no winner declared

Date:

The West Indies’ domestic one-day tournament ended without a winner after neither captain turned up for the toss, resulting in a double forfeit.

Barbados Pride and Jamaica Scorpions were scheduled to contest the final of the Super50 Cup on Sunday in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.

Bad weather reduced the scheduled 50-over game to a 20-over match, but with neither side taking the field for the delayed start, the final was abandoned.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) said, external no winner would be declared and they would now review tournament regulations to avoid a repeat.

A statement explained that the final had initially been delayed when scattered showers began around an hour before the scheduled 1pm start.

“However, around 5.45pm, the officiating team determined that the game could proceed at the latest possible start time of 6.17pm,” the statement continued. “They informed the players of this and that the toss would be conducted at 6pm.

“Despite assurances from the umpires and match referee that the conditions were safe for play, both captains failed to be present for the toss, allowing time to elapse past the latest starting point.

“As a result, both teams failed to take the field, effectively refusing to play. This resulted in a double forfeit, with no champion being declared.”

The CWI said tournament rules stated that if no play was possible in the final, both teams would be declared co-winners – but as match referee Reon King had judged play to be possible, no winner was announced.

Barbados and Jamaica had reached the final of the eight-team, month-long tournament by finishing in the top four of the league stage before winning their respective semi-finals on 20 November.

Barbados beat Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by 153 runs, while Jamaica defeated Leeward Islands Hurricanes by 107 runs.
