Sycamore junior Eva Becerril wins OHSAA Division I golf state championship

The third time was the charm for Eva Becerril.

Becerril, a Sycamore junior, finished tied for 20th in the OHSAA Division I state final as a freshman in 2022 before a 19th-place tie last year. Becerril shot a 68 on the second day of the 2024 tournament to finish alone at the top as the Division I state medalist.

Becerril, who won her second Greater Miami Conference Athlete of the Year award earlier in the season, shot a 75 after the tournament’s first day and was tied for eighth place, five strokes behind Olentangy’s Meadow Tian.

Becerril dominated on day two, shooting a 68 to finish with a 143, winning the championship by three strokes. Her round was the only sub-70 round in the girls Division I tournament and one of only six across all of the OHSAA state finals this season.

Becerril became the second local golf state championship after Wyoming’s Finley Bartlett won his second Division II state title.

Springboro girls finish in 8th, Anderson follows in 9th

On the team side of the leaderboards, Magnificat shot a 618 to clinch the Division I championship. Springboro had a 680 to finish in eighth, one shot behind Centerville. Anderson’s team score of 688 put the Raptors behind Springboro at ninth.

Senior Taylor Dunkle led Springboro, shooting 157 and finishing tied for 15th overall. The Panthers also had Elise Dunkle shoot a 169, Kinsley Brown a 171, Payton Bailey a 183 and Mickaela Grieshop was the fifth scorer with a 188.

The Raptors were paced by Aubrey Lunn’s 33rd-place finish with 168 and Ellie Lamkin’s 174. Ayla Brugger, Sydney Dodds and Sara Lunn all tied for 46th place by shooting 177.

Lebanon’s Olivia Donovan finished tied for 30th with a 166 and Mount Notre Dame’s Campbell Drum was tied for 38th with a 170.

St. Xavier nabs 3rd-place team finish as senior Michael Stagnaro ties for third individually

St. Xavier senior Michael Stagnaro had a tournament-low 68 after his first round before finishing with a 145 total and a third-place tie individually. Stagnaro’s finish helped lead his Bombers to a 620 total, good for third place just 25 strokes behind champion Akron Hoban.

Stagnaro, the only Division I boy to have a sub-70 round, was one stroke behind runner-up Liam Curtis of Roosevelt and three strokes away from Hoban’s Chris Pollak.

Owen Sedgwick was second for the Bombers with a 158, which tied him for 25th place. Other Bomber finishers were Eli Moore (160), Patrick Paquette (161) and George Baker (165).

Anderson’s 648 was good for eighth and Moeller was a spot behind after amassing a 656 score for the tournament.

Moeller senior Landon Harris was 15th in the state with a 152. He was joined by fellow Crusaders Tripp Johnson (165), Charlie Schenk (170), Will Daulton (171) and Griffin Valencic (173). Anderson’s top placer was Marshall Morency with a 155, which put him at 22nd overall. Anderson also scored Ben Trigg and Reed Young’s 164, Charlie Straubel’s 165 and Cole Brandon’s 175.

Elder’s Cayse Morgan, who placed third last year, shot a 154 to finish his career with an 18th-place tie.
