La Liga president Javier Tebas recently shared his belief that Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr could win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
“[He] could be the next Ballon d’Or winner,” said Tebas as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
Interestingly, Tebas was quick to steer clear of any controversy, particularly around sensitive topics, by firmly stating that neither Spain nor Spanish football should be labelled as racist.
He emphasised that La Liga has been actively working against racism for a long time. Tebas acknowledged that the incidents involving Vinicius were a turning point, sparking a collective realisation across the country.
“We have been working against racism for a long time. Since what happened with Vinicius there was a catharsis. Spain is not racist, there is collaboration between fans and those who insult. Since that day there is much more social awareness,” he added.
Furthermore, Tebas also touched on other matters related to Real Madrid. He mentioned the impact of French star Kylian Mbappe, who continues to be a major talking point in football circles.
According to Tebas, Mbappe’s presence has “a great impact on the league” since “his name alone already generates expectation”.
Vinicius in controversy
Meanwhile, Vinicius’ situation at Real Madrid appears more complicated than it seems on the surface.
While his undeniable talent makes him one of the brightest stars in the sport, there are concerns within the club about his attitude and behaviour.
Vinicius also made headlines for his goal celebration against Real Sociedad, where he silenced the crowd after scoring. This move attracted widespread attention and led to further controversy.
The Brazilian, however, has received support from senior figures at the club, including manager Carlo Ancelotti and second captain Dani Carvajal.
