Oct. 16—A South Aiken girls’ golf team recognized as one of the state’s best has championship dreams it hopes to realize at the end of this month.
There’s some other business to attend to during the home stretch, with a couple of boxes to check off before the second-ranked T-Breds can try to lift that Class AAAA title trophy.
First on that list was Tuesday’s Region 4-AAAA tournament, which was only a formality once the teams teed off at Barnwell’s Sweetwater Country Club. South Aiken coasted to an 83-shot victory, with Allie Thomas making it a clean sweep by claiming medalist honors.
Thomas, who co-medaled with Aiken’s Phoebe Hiner last year, this time left zero doubt by posting a round of 73 for a nine-shot victory. She, Blair Wood (83), Zoey Meldrum (86) and Avery Palmer (86) gave the T-Breds four of the six players on the All-Region team, and they were joined by Hiner (82) and North Augusta’s Phebe Reese (86).
Gilbert finished second as a team at 415, with North Augusta right behind in third at 417. Aiken was fourth at 448, with Gray Collegiate (453) and Airport (515) rounding out the team scores at Sweetwater.
Up next is the Class AAAA Lower State qualifier, scheduled for Oct. 21 at Crescent Pointe Golf Club in Bluffton. Top-ranked May River is the host.
The Class AAAA state championship tournament is scheduled for Oct. 28-29 at Rose Hill Golf Club in Bluffton. Hilton Head Island is the host school.
