Watch: Fan at Scottish Open walks onto tee box and grabs one of Rory McIlroy’s clubs

Date:

We have another golf course intruder.

A fan at the Scottish Open on Friday decided that he really needed to grab one of Rory McIlroy’s clubs out of the bag. The fan casually walked onto the No. 10 tee box as McIlroy, Jon Rahm and McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, were chatting before they teed off for the second round.

As they were talking, the fan grabbed a club out of McIlroy’s bag and decided that it was time to get ready for a practice swing. Here’s a video of what happened. Just look at the stunned confusion on the faces of McIlroy and Rahm as they realize what had just happened.

It’s a good thing the fan only wanted to grab a club and not do anything else, given how easy it appeared for him to get onto the course. A European Tour statement didn’t shed much light on the security breach either.

“At approximately 8am on Friday morning, a spectator entered the 10th tee area,” the tour said. “He was quickly escorted from the tee by security personnel and the matter is now in the hands of Police Scotland.”

The Scottish Open precedes the British Open and many of the PGA Tour’s top players are in Scotland for the event to get ready for the fourth and final major of the year.

The fan intrusion is also the second significant one to happen in golf this summer. A fan ran onto the 13th fairway at Torrey Pines during the final round of the U.S. Open a few weeks ago. Unlike this fan — who needed to grab a club from McIlroy’s bag — the one at the U.S. Open brought his own clubs onto the course.

Perhaps golf course security will be a topic of offseason debate for the PGA and European Tours. And perhaps we all need to calm down in our post-pandemic sporting world. There have been far too many dumb fan incidents in sports in 2021. And they need to end before something really serious happens.
