The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team heads to Tennessee to face the Memphis Tigers on Tuesday (7 p.m., ESPNU) in a charity exhibition game at FedEx Forum.

The ninth-ranked Tar Heels and the Tigers are coming together to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in a game that won’t count against or help either squad’s resume come Selection Sunday.

“I think it’ll be good for us. We’ve got 10 new guys on the team, including walk-ons, transfers and freshmen,” UNC coach Hubert Davis said at ACC Tipoff in Charlotte.

“I’ve got tremendous respect for (Memphis coach) Penny (Hardaway). We played against each other in the NBA. He’s doing a terrific job coaching his school. And so being able to go on the road and play against his team is going to be really good for us.

“Being on the road, traveling as a team, playing at a high level on national TV gives us a really good indication on things that we’re doing well, that we want to continue to grow and things that we need to address and get better with. And (puts) us in a better position in practice to focus on the things that we need to improve on.”

Memphis is led by guards Tyrese Hunter and PJ Haggerty. UNC is paced by returning starters RJ Davis, the reigning ACC Player of the Year, and Elliot Cadeau.

The Hoops for St. Jude Tip Off Classic is a doubleheader, with the reigning national champion South Carolina women’s team and Memphis capping the night.

UNC’s game against the Tigers is the first of two exhibition games in October. The Heels host Johnson C. Smith on Oct. 27 (2 p.m., ACC Network Extra) before opening the regular season on Nov. 4 against Elon (9 p.m., ACC Network) at the Smith Center.
