Why Kylian Mbappé Is Paying Price for Rejecting Real Madrid in 2022

Kylian Mbappé’s transition to Real Madrid has been anything but smooth since joining on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Nonetheless, one pundit believes that the Frenchman is paying the price for his decision i

The 25-year-old has encountered a tough start, with his challenges continuing in a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League’s league phase.

His El Clásico debut on October 26 was especially difficult, as Real Madrid suffered a heavy 4-0 loss to Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu. Just days later, they fell 3-1 to AC Milan in the Champions League.

On Wednesday, with Vinicius unavailable, Mbappé had the chance to step up in his preferred role against Liverpool. However, the night turned into a nightmare for the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner.

In 2022, Mbappé chose to renew his contract with PSG, a decision Kevin Diaz has described as catastrophic. Speaking on After Foot RMC on Friday, Diaz shared his reasoning behind this strong opinion.

“What’s completely crazy about Mbappé—and he’s intelligent, so he must realize this—is that not only did he miss the train two years ago, but he also handed the keys to the truck to a guy who has since become the best forward in the world,” Diaz said (h/t Le10Sport). “Two years ago, Vinicius was almost nowhere. Mbappé left room for Vinicius, who pressed the button and became one of the best in the world.

“On top of that, he’s losing Toni Kroos, he has Luka Modric who’s two years older, there are two or three injuries in the team that make it weaker than last year, and they’re under immense pressure because Real Madrid won everything last year. So, really, nothing is working in his favor. If you add all the off-field issues, he hasn’t helped himself with his catastrophic decision to stay at PSG.”
