Why Messi, Mbappé Departures Didn’t Impact PSG’s Revenue, per Club Chief

Since 2023, Lionel Messi, Neymar Jr., and Kylian Mbappé have all left Paris Saint-Germain. As a result, many would assume that the French giants’ brand would suffer. However, one club chief says that’s not the case.

Messi left for Inter Miami, while Neymar went to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, and finally, this year, Mbappé left for Real Madrid as a free agent. Moreover, the Parisians have a new transfer policy as they want young players who have yet to reach their potential.

While that strategy is ideal for building a football team, it doesn’t help when it comes to marketing. Losing their three marquee players should mean that PSG have lost its appeal to them.

Nonetheless, PSG’s new general manager, Victoriano Melero, sat down with Le Parisien to discuss the club’s revenue and the effect of losing star players. Despite losing their star players, Melero states that the capital club’s revenue haven’t taken a hit as many would assume.

“Impact? There hasn’t been any. Revenues for the 2023-24 season are actually higher than last season, and we’ll see more growth in 2025,” Melero said (h/t Sport.fr). “Commercial revenue is still on the rise. On social media, we’ve hit 212 million followers, a seven percent increase.

“A drop on Facebook was balanced out by gains on TikTok and Twitch, which appeal to a younger audience. Targeting that new generation is part of our strategy. Whether it’s ticket sales, sponsorships, or social media, growth is still strong.”
